Choosing Between Yakima RidgeBack # Y02459 and Hollywood Racks Road Runner # HR520

Im am torn between 2 hitch- mount bike racks. The Hollywood HR520 5 bike rackinch and the Yakima Y02459. I am mounting it to a 2009 Honda Odyssey. I would only be racking 4 bikes. But, it sounds as though a 5 rack carrier would give me a more comfortable fit for 2 adult and 2 kid bikes. Do you have any advise on the quality/durability of the 2 racks? I guess what Im looking for, is advice on the better of the 2 racks I have narrowed my search down to. Thanks in advance.

The main differences between the Yakima RidgeBack # Y02459 and Hollywood Racks Road Runner # HR520 are that the Road Runner includes locks both for the rack itself and your loaded bikes, the Road Runner's arms are a bit further apart which might make loading some bikes easier and that the Yakima can fit two hitch sizes, 1-1/4- and 2-inch, while the Road Runner fits only 2-inch hitches. If a second vehicle is in the plan then this feature may make the difference. Please note your Odyssey could be fitted with either a 1-1/4-inch or 2-inch hitch; for transporting 4 bikes a 2-inch hitch will offer you more weight capacity. Both racks are solidly built, have a 150-lb capacity and carry a limited lifetime warranty. If it were me, I'd opt for the Road Runner since it has the straps to hold the bikes steady.

You are correct that a 5-bike rack is great for use with 4 bikes; you do gain a little more breathing room between bikes and you also stand to have better clearance from the back of the vehicle to the nearest bike. I suggest loading the adult bikes first to keep their higher weight closer to the vehicle; this will tend to help reduce random rack motion while underway. I linked videos on each of these carriers.

If any of the bikes lack a main horizontal top frame tube (as found on a typical man's bike) then you may benefit from a bike adapter bar # HRBA-PRO. These allow such bikes to remain level on the carrier for better ground clearance.
