Recommended Lubrication of B & W 5th Wheel Hitch

Continuing with Brandon S questions, where do I need to lubricate the BWRVK3400, other than on the urethane points discussed in the directions? Where on the slider portion and what about on the plate itself? What kind of grease do you recommend? They only list a high quality lithium grease in the directions? Would a lube plate be any benefit and, if so, what size do you recommend for this hitch?

Expert Reply:

B & W recommends you lubricate the top surface of the coupler with an automotive type chassis grease like # L10337 or use a nylon lube plate like # RP83002 to provide a lubricated surface.

They also recommend you grease the jaws with an automotive type chassis grease and grease the saddle through the grease zerk about every six months with multi-purpose grease like # L11316. This will allow the coupler to pivot freely. See the diagram I have included showing the location of the grease zerk.

Finally B & W recommends you lubricate the polyurethane bushings on top of the pivot arms with high grade lithium grease.

Plastic lube plates can be used to avoid messy grease. The proper size lube plate for use with the B and W Companion hitch is a 10-inch diameter lube plate.

We carry two lube plates this size. The Reese Lube Plate for Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches - 10 inch Diameter, item # RP83002, and the Curt 10 inch Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch Lube Plate, item # 16721, will both work with your Companion hitch nicely.

I spoke with my contact at B&W and they do not recommend lubricating the slider legs.

I have also included a link to our FAQ article on grease compatibility for you. Make sure that if you use 2 different types of grease that they are compatible.
