Where Do Trailer Axles Typically Break When They Break

Published 12/20/2024

Question:

Hey, I have a trailer that I am refurbishing and I am currently working on the suspension. I have 2, 2500lb leaf springs, and an unknown rated axle. In the center of the axle I have a 12-16 inch sleeve that someone has welded on prior. I am wondering if this is intentional or a repair from previous damage. My question is, when trailer axles break, where are they MOST LIKELY too? In the center? In the hub? Around each spring? Thank you for your help.

Hi Pat; there are a lot of factors that play into this but most of what we see is a bent/broken spindle. I would say most issues come from overloading and then a lack of regular maintenance like repacking bearings. Since you have an unknown capacity and some kind of sleeve welded onto the axle I would replace the axle just to be safe and to know your limitations so you don't overload it.
