What is High and Low Voltage in Cars

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/19/2024

Question:

Im looking at the Curt 51170 brake controller and it says its Compatible with low-volt, PWM, ABS, cruise control and electric over hydraulic. My question: What is low-volt? Does that mean the red wire might have a lower voltage on it than battery? Please help me understand. Thank you!

Hey Monnie, so from what I can understand low voltage wiring is 50v or less. There is also high voltage which is classified at 60V or higher, but this isn't super common unless you're using an EV (most of the time).

Hey Monnie, did that explanation about low voltage help clear things up for you? Knowing how that applies to the Curt brake controller could be useful for others wondering the same thing. Your feedback might help the next person understand it better.
