Can I Put Heavier Rated leaf Spring On My Grand Design 317BH?
Updated 08/14/2024 | Published 08/10/2024 >
Question:
I have a grand design 3170bh gvrw of 10k I bought the 4500lbs leaf springs because that’s what my axle rating is. Would I be able to put the 6k leafs on without having too much stiffness or should I stay with the 4500lbs? Thank you

Hello Matt. Generally, I do recommend sticking with springs that have a weight rating equal to that of the axle. Sometimes we can go a bit heavier with the springs, but a 6K spring is going to be much too stout for a 4,500 lb axle. This would likely create a pretty rough ride since there would not be enough weight on the springs to make them flex properly. You might be able to get away with something like a 5,000 lb spring but that is as high as I would go.
The best thing to do will be to jack up one side of the trailer so you can measure the springs when not under a load. Leaf springs are measured from center eye to center eye. If you can tell me this measurement for your springs I am happy to look into it and see if we have any good options for you.
