Flat Towing A Jeep With A 2020 Tiffin Wayfare Motorhome With A 4,200 lb Towing Capacity

Question:
Hi, I have a 2020 Tiffin Wayfare on a Mercedes Chassis with the 3.0 engine. I also have a 2020 4D Jeep Rubicon. The Tiffin says it has 5000lb capacity with some feedback that the actual tow capacity is 4200 lbs. We took our Jeep Rubicon to a weight station and found it is about 4700 lbs. I really want to tow my Rubicon but I am getting feedback from some that it is too heavy, and my insurance wouldnt cover an accident. Others are claiming that isnt true because when you Flat tow there is little or no tounge weight. Something I read online said the Circa approximate weight is reduced by 50 when you flat tow. So, is this true? Would my Rubicon still be covered by insurance, or should I trade it for a lighter 2D Jeep? Please advise.

Hello Herb, thanks for reaching out. If the actual towing capacity of your coach is 4,200 lbs, I cannot recommend that you tow a 4,700 lb vehicle. There is way too much risk involved, and I would hate for something to go wrong, and you not be covered by insurance. I am not sure exactly what your insurance policy or coverage is, but I will never recommend that anyone overload a hitch like that.
You are right that there is very little tongue weight on the hitch when flat towing, but the weight of the vehicle still applies, and you would be knowingly overloading your hitch. I have never heard of the weight being reduced by 50% when flat towing, so that source may not have been reliable. Since there is no good way to increase the capacity of your hitch, I have to recommend that you find a lighter vehicle to flat tow.
