What is the Purpose of Running a Wire to the Battery on a Powered Trailer Wiring Harness Install

what is the purpose of the power connection to the battery for the t-one harness? all i want is a harness to operate a small trailers rear stop, brake and backup lights. what harness should i purchase. i have a 2013 ford escape

On some vehicles like your 2013 Ford Escape it has been determined that the electrical system cannot or should not handle the load from its own tail lights and the trailer lights as well so they need a powered converter. These converters like the Tow Ready Wiring harness part # 118566 get power for the trailer lights primarily from the vehicle battery. This protects the vehicle electronics. They only use your vehicle taillights as signal wires.
