Published 03/18/2024

Question:

Atwood 1361 rooftop AC in 2015 GD 5th wheel. Single zone. With temp set LOW, it works fine. With temp set to about 72 when it cycles on and off that after a cycle is sort of winds down slowly and stops with a hard thud!

Jeff, from what it sounds like, it may just be as simple as a couple of bolts or screws holding the condenser down being loose. So, I'd recommend removing the shroud and checking to make sure everything is properly tightened down and checking that there isn't any debris inside your unit.

It also wouldn't hurt to have a licensed technician check the Freon levels because too much or too little can also cause your condenser to make noise.

Thanks Bryce. Here’s another twist, I have the wall thermostat completely off, yet I’m sitting here and the compressor, I believe, has turned on by itself. It will run along for a while and then wind down to a hard stop. Why is the compressor coming on while the thermostat is shut off?

@Jeff Hey Jeff, that is a twist but now it sounding like it could be a bad or failed relay, fan, starting condenser, or control board. Unfortunately, you'll have to check each one, eliminate it and move to the next.
