How Does Roof Rack Capacity of 165 lb Work with Roof Top Tent
Question:
I was interested in a roof tent for my 2020 Santa Fe SUV. The rail capacity is 165#. That may hold the tent, but how do two adults sleep in the tent? This appears to be extremely overloaded. Thoughts? Thank you,

Expert Reply:
The 165 lb capacity of the roof of your 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is actually a dynamic capacity which means that the capacity is when the vehicle is travelling down the road where there are a lot of bumps that will exaggerate the weight on the roof. The static capacity would be the weight it can hold at a stop. Most of the time roofs aren't rated for a static capacity since roof tents are a more recent thing that has become more popular.
