Will A Rota-Flex Pin Box Provide A Better Ride Quality With A Curt CrossWing 5th Wheel Hitch

Question:

I have a Curt CrossWing 5th wheel hitch. Would a Trailair rota-flex 5th wheel pin provide any additional comfort in my towing ride. What would you tell your father to do. Is the rota-flex really worth the extra money?

If you have the Gooseneck versions of the Curt CrossWing ( # C92DR or # C32DR) you unfortunately would not be able to use the Rota-Flex with it. The pivoting head causing too much strain for the single point of contact you have with a gooseneck hitch. If you have the base rail version # C86JR with four points of contact then you would be able to use a Rota-Flex pin box.

As for the ride quality, the pivoting head of the Rota-Flex can help reduce chucking so it would be worth considering with your CrossWing since it only has a rubber pad between the head and shank to absorb chucking. Curt has some customer reviews on their site saying that the combination eliminated all chucking but each situation is going to be different. That being said, the Rota-Flex has a lot of compatibility issues with certain 5th wheel hitches so I try to avoid it to go with a MORryde Cushioned Pin Box instead.

These come with an internal shear spring and glide pads that allow the skid plate to move and absorb road shock and chucking. They also don't have the same compatibility issues with 5th wheel hitches like the Rota-Flex does. To find the correct one for your trailer we'll first need to know your bolt pattern and the GVWR of the trailer. For example, if you had a 1621 bolt pattern and 15k GVWR you could use the # MR84VR.

Would using the blue ox lockout kit allow you to use the rota-flex with the crosswind since that kit converts it to a normal pinbox?

@Vi Per Curt the CrossWing # C86JR is compatible with the Rota-Flex pin box without any adapters needed so you would only need to use the Rota-Flex Lockout Kit # BLU62XR if you had the gooseneck adapter version # C92DR or # C32DR.

@KevinC thanks I just seen a setup where someone said it failed when using it with the rota flex and began to sag.

@Vi Both Curt's website and our own have reviews stating that they've worked together and helped eliminate chucking for those specific people. Each setup is going to be a bit different though so if it failed for one person it could be an indicator that they had the trailer overloaded or improperly loaded.
