Will the Swagman Platform-Style RV Bike Rack # S64663 Work with a Recumbent Bike

We camp with two bikes my wife has a mountain bike. I have a recumbent with a 70 inch wheel base. Is there a way to make this rake work for us? We need this to hook to your 4in. bumper. Please help.

The Swagman Platform-Style Bike Carrier, # S64663, will support a maximum wheel base of 52 inches, so it would not be compatible with your recumbent bike. Your best and safest option would likely be to carry the recumbent bike on the roof of your vehicle if possible.

You could use Thule part # TH558P. This bike rack requires a roof rack with either Thule square or Yakima round crossbars that run side to side on your vehicle. If you are interested in this route and can send me the year, make and model of your vehicle and the roof style (factory roof rack, bare roof), I would be happy to make a specific recommendation for you.

If you want to stay with a bumper mount bike rack, you may be able to use part # S80605 and space them far enough apart on the bumper to fit your recumbent bike. One problem you may encounter with this route is that the mountain bike may not fit with the wheel mounts spread far apart.

You could also look into a ladder mount bike rack like part # SP501BR. You would have to mount the bike rack on the ladder at a height that would not create ground clearance problems with your recumbent bike. This could make loading and unloading difficult.

At this time we there are no RV or trailer approved bike racks that are designed for recumbent style bikes.
