Comparing Reese 5th Wheel Hitches R16 # RP30866 and R20 # RP30867

Question:

I am trying to decide between the Reese R20 and R16 fifth wheel hitches. The RV we have ordered has a GTW of 14.4K pounds, so the R16 would probably be just fine. But, the R20 comes with a lube plate, so once you purchase that with the R16, it brings the price up very close. Thanks for your help, again!

Helpful Expert Reply:

The Reese R16 and R20 5th wheel hitches, parts # RP30866 and # RP30867, have many features and characteristics in common, including a cast serrated dual-jaw system for 360-degree king pin contact, and a wide funnel and a 4-way pivoting head for easier hitching. They differ in their pin weight (vertical load) and gross towing weight ratings and as you noted, in that the R20 has an integrated (and removable) lube plate.

As you point out, the R16 has sufficient capacity for your new fifth wheel. However, the modest price difference between the R16 and the R20 makes a good argument for trading up to the higher-rated hitch. All other things being equal, it may indeed be worth the additional up-front cost to go with the higher-rated R20, just in order to have the additional capacity and safety margin. It may be a while before you trade up to a larger heavier trailer, if you ever do, but having the R20 will allow this flexibility. If you want, the lube plate # 83003 can be added to the R16 (drilling is required).
