our brakes on axle are a 1 piece expanding shoe.held in place with 5 bolt backing plate.looks old 360 degree magnet held to backing plate encircling spindle by springs,drums have a friction disk attached by metal traps to inside drum,looks rotor like. face.magnet has friction material incased in it to apply brake shoe to expandsingle shoe, CAN I REPLACE BACKING PLATE WITH MODERN SHOE STYLE, INNER BRG 25580 AXLE

If the axle uses a standard brake mounting flange such as the one in the photo below then you can switch to modern braking assemblies like the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-105-106 which matches up with the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # 8-201-5UC3 (2.125" I.D. Grease Seal) or part # K08-201-97 (2.25" I.D. Grease Seal).
