Can 1,200 lb Reese Weight Distribution Hitch be Used With 500 lb Tongue Weight

This was originally for a Rockwood 33 foot Windjammer with a 1000# or so of tongue weight. I am now purchasing a Winnebago 2108TB that might have about 500# of tongue weight. With the hitch I have the 1200# 12000# bars and Im wondering if this can be used? I called Reese and they were no help apparently because the hitch is 10 years old though I believe that its still made. Thoughts, or should I buy a new WDH? Im towing with a 2020 RAM 1500 and would like to wander coast to coast.

Wandering coast to coast sounds fantastic, but to do so with a pleasant ride, you'll need a new weight distribution hitch. Even if the hitch is 10 years old, they should have been able to tell you that a 1,200 lb system is rated far too highly to be used with 500 lbs of tongue weight; the ride would be very bad on your trailer and it would bounce tremendously.

So you can replace yours with the appropriately rated Reese Strait-Line weight distribution hitch with sway control, and you can either re-use the shank you already have or (if you wanted to sell your current WDH with the shank), go with a new hitch and shank. Here is what you'll need for a loaded trailer with 500 lbs of tongue weight:

- WITH Shank: Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66083

- WITHOUT Shank: Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66073

These systems are rated for total tongue weights between 400 lbs and 800 lbs, which is why they are perfectly rated for your 500 lbs of total tongue weight.

The only other thing you will need is the right hitch ball, one with a 1-1/4" diameter shank; the right one, depending on the Winnebago's coupler, will be either the 2" Hitch Ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 19286.
