Uprgading Wheels and Tires and Regular Bearing Maintenance

Updated 11/30/2021 | Published 11/29/2021

Question:

Hi, my current trailer has 12x4.80 tires/rims, 5 lugs, and I was wondering if I could use a 13 tire on the trailer so I could improve the speed rating. I would have to buy a new rim right? Also, how often do I need to check the bearings? The previous owner just installed new hubs and I was unsure of how to maintain them. thanks,

Depending on the clearance of your fenders you should have no problem changing to a 13" wheel and tire. You will need a minimum 1/2" more space than you currently have to accommodate the larger tire. I recommend the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 item # AM3S160. These are load range c tires, they have a capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi, and have a maximum speed of 81 mph. You should inspect your bearings annually or every 3,000 miles. You will want to ensure they are properly lubricated using a bearing grease like the LubriMatic LMX Industrial Strength Grease - 14 oz. Cartridge item # L11390. I also recommend the Heavy Duty Grease Gun - Lever Action - Aluminum item # PTW54290. I personally own this grease gun and have never had any issues with it. The flexible hose makes accessing hard to reach grease zerks super easy.
