Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch That is Easy to Use

Question:

I need a hitch to pull and Airstream with a Curb Weight of 5297, a GVRW of 6300 and a Hitch Weight of 591. I will be towing it with a Ford Expedition. I am a petite woman with no upper body strength, and a lot of the hitches look like they are heavy, and have components that need to be muscled into place. Can you recommend a hitch that would be safe, easy for me to use, and easy to hitch/unhitch when traveling to campsites. Thank you!

When it comes to a weight distribution hitch they are all fairly similar. Depending on what you think you are capable of, a WDH might not work for you since they are all fairly hefty, but it will be the best solution to provide you with a level ride and sway control.

What will likely be the easiest for you to use is the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - Underslung - 8K GTW, 750 lbs TW # BXW0753. In order to recommend the proper weight distribution hitch it is important to know the loaded tongue weight of your Airstream. It sounds like what you listed is the dry tongue weight. This system will work for a tongue weight range of 550-750 lbs. If you find that your loaded tongue weight is over 750 lbs we also have the SwayPro # BXW1000 for 750-1,000 lbs of tongue weight.

When you connect the bars with this system you will want to run the jack up as high as you can with it coupled to the vehicle. This makes installing the bars a lot easier. I have attached a review and installation video which shows this. I would watch the video and evaluate if you think this is something that will work for you. If not, I have another possible option.

For sway control you could use an electronic system like the Sway Command Electronic Sway Control System for Electric Trailer Brakes - 1 to 2 Axles # LC380605. This will help correct trailer sway without a weight distribution system. In addition to this, you could add suspension enhancement to your vehicle. This, however, is not the ideal solution. If you let me know the year of your Ford Expedition I would be happy to make a recommendation on suspension enhancement.

In addition to the installation video I have attached a review of the electronic sway control system. I also attached several help articles on weight distribution and tongue weight for your reference.
