Location of Center of Hide-A-Goose Gooseneck Ball on a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71

Question:

Where should the ball hole location be on a 2005 Chevy 1500 Z71 with a short box. The 44 1/2inch mark looks to be about 5inch in front of the axle. Is this right?

First, on a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500, you would need to use # 9465-54. The installation kit for the hitch your referenced is not designed for the 1500. For 9465-54 the measurement is 44-3/4 inches from the rear edge of the bed forward. See instructions link. The ball should be centered in most every case either directly above the rear axle or a few inches in front of the rear axle. Any further back than this and the truck will ride high in the front causing steering and braking problems.
