Typically the center pin of the 7-way carries the reverse lamp signal, but you could swap the wires on the connector to change the center pin to a different function if you wish. However, rather than rewiring the trailer connector on the vehicle, it's best to rewire the trailer so its connector is wired conventionally as shown the the trailer wiring help article I've linked for you.

If your 2001 Ram has the factory tow package and you're just wanting to replace that factory 7-way for a new one, I'd use # 20135 as a replacement. It'll also provide a 4 pole connector.

If you don't have the factory tow package, you can wire in a 7-way using part # 20023
