How to Choose the Correct Ball Mount for a 2008 Mazda CX-9 GT and a 3500 lb Steel Utility Trailer

Question:

I have a 2008 Mazda CX-9 GT with the factory installed tow package and hitch. It has a 1.25 inch receiver and it is rated for 3500 pounds towing capacity. I recently purchased a 5 x 8 steel utility trailer that weighs approximately 800 pounds. I plan to use this for runs to the dump and various other projects around the home. I am curious to know what length of a ball mount I require. it appears that one with a 1 to 2 inch rise will be sufficient. I would welcome any advise you have on this issue - and thank you in advance for the same. Thanks

To determine the correct rise or drop that you need in a ball mount, you will need two measurements. To begin, place your trailer and your 2008 Mazda CX-9 GT on level ground. The first measurement is the hitch height. This is measured from the ground to the top of the opening of the receiver on your trailer hitch.

Next, we will need the coupler height. This can be found by measuring from the ground to the bottom of the coupler on your trailer.

Once you have these measurements, you simply compute the difference. If the hitch height is greater than the coupler height, then you subtract the coupler height from the hitch height to get the drop that you will need.

If the coupler height is greater than the hitch height, then you subtract the hitch height from the coupler height to get the rise that you will need.

Choosing the correct rise or drop in a ball mount is a common question people have. We have developed a help article that you may find useful when trying to find these measurements. Check out the link that I have attached for choosing the correct ball mount.
