Hitch Extender for 2014 Toyota Tundra Towing Trailer with Weight Distribution

Question:

This brand seems to be the only one with ratings for weight distribution. Why don’t any of the others allow this? In one of the QandA for the 18in equalizer shank it specifically says not to use WD with a hitch extender. I have a Tundra and a 4500 lb trailer with the 10k equalizer WD system. Is this hitch extender safe to use?

The further you extend the connection point between the truck and trailer and the more adapters you use, the less your weight capacity will be. The Brophy Hitch Extender part # ST18 can be used with a weight distribution system but you will reduce your towing capacity by 1/3 or 7,000 lbs, whichever is lower. Therefore, if the trailer hitch on your tow vehicle is rated for 13,500 lbs or more then you can use the Brophy Hitch Extender.

There are other adapters available but each manufacturer will specify the terms for use. There are some that will list higher capacities when weight distribution systems are used both others avoid this entirely due to lack of testing. That said, your best option would be the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension part # TLE1521 which requires the TorkLift SuperHitch Hero Trailer Hitch Receiver part # TLT1300H. This combo is less cost effective yes but it's really the only way to extend the connection point to the amount you need and still have a weight capacity suited for towing.
