Question:
I see this is rated for 15k lbs. Will the dampening effect work as well on a much lighter tow, such as a 2,500 lbs. boat? If cost is not an issue, what you recommend for towing trailers in the 2k to 5k lbs. range?

This is a really great question. I reached out to my contact at Curt and he said that while the Rebellion XD Shock-Absorbing Adjustable Ball Mount # C45949 is a really nice option for heavier tongue weights to help smooth out the ride, it's not going to provide much benefit for a lighter trailer like yours. Your boat simply isn't going to have enough tongue weight to really compress the cushioned isolator, so it's going to end up being a case of paying for something you won't actually use.
For your boat trailer I highly recommend looking at the Weigh Safe 180 Hitch 2-Ball Mount # LTB6-2 instead, which offers a maximum rise of 7" and a maximum drop of 6". It includes two different sized hitch balls (2" and 2-5/16") and its aluminum construction with stainless steel balls provides you with a completely rust-resistant system, which is perfect for boat trailer applications. It has plenty of capacity for your trailer and the locking dual pins secure the ball platform to the shank to help deter theft. I do recommend adding the Hitch Lock # WS05 to secure the ball mount to your hitch.
I have included a short video review below on this ball mount that you can also check out.
