Hitch Recommendation For A 2018 Volkswagen Golf R

I just bought a 2018 Golf r. What’s the best hitch for my car? And is anything exposed other than the receiver end? I had a curt hitch on my old GTI and the whole bottom bar and receiver were all exposed, which eliminated some rear ground clearance. I’d occasionally scratch the hitch on concrete. Also, depending on the hitch, does it require any cutting of the bumper or any other part of the car?

Depending on what you intend on using your hitch for, you can select either the 1-1/4" hitch or a 2" receiver. A 2 inch Class III or higher trailer hitch generally will be stronger just by the nature of how much steel is used and the fact that 2 inch trailer hitches are built larger and with more towing capacity in mind. While there is no additional capacity provided, a 2" could provide flexibility to carry more accessories.

The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7332 is my recommendation overall here. EcoHitch uses 100% recycled materials, are made in the USA, and provide a limited lifetime warranty.

For 1-1/4" hitches that fit your Golf R, the Draw-Tite # 24975, the Curt # C11564, and EcoHitch# 306-X7333 will all fit your 2018 VW Golf R model, and are quality hitches with 200 lb tongue weight capacity and 2,000 lb towing capacity but there are some differences. Because the Curt has 9" of distance from the top of the receiver tube to the ground while the EcoHitch provides 10-1/2" to provide additional ground clearance. This is my reason for recommending the EcoHitch if you go with a 1-1/4" hitch. This can make a big difference in keeping accessories like bike racks from scraping the ground in transport.

There is some fascia trimming required to install all 4 tow hitches. The installation is pretty involved and I would recommend reviewing the included instructions ahead or purchase to get acquainted with what is required.
