In order to install a 7-way trailer connector on your 2019 Toyota RAV4 you will first want to start off with a 4-way, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118801 which is plug and play. Once you have this installed you can then use a 4-way to 7-way adapter, I recommend the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L. If you were to use this adapter with the brake controller I recommend, the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180, you would only need to run one wire from the adapter to the battery once you mate the two 4-ways together.

The Echo does not require any modifications to the tow vehicle, it just plugs into the 7-way. It uses a device you are already comfortable using (your phone), you do not need to read an entire comprehensive manual and familiarize yourself with the controls and codes to use it. Please note that if your phone loses power the brake controller will still function as normal.

Question:

Can this be done without the Echo device? I really don't want that.

Yes, if you did not want to use the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 then you would need to substitute the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation part # ETBC7L for the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7 and then you could use a brake controller of your choosing. I also like the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller part # 331-EBRH-ACCV2 because it gets installed under the dash, out of sight and then a control knob that gets mounted on your dash wherever you prefer. This will provide a very clean look and will allow you to mount it in many different locations whereas standard brake controllers like the Prodigy P2/P3 will need to be in a certain position inside the cab.

Please keep in mind for this option or any non-wireless brake controller you will need to splice into the vehicle's stop light switch circuit as well as run a power and ground wire from the brake controller to the battery. This process is far more involved than installing the Curt Echo.
