How To Convert a 4-Way Trailer Connector to a 7-Way on a 2012 Nissan Frontier

Question:

Hello, I currently have a 2012 Nissan Frontier with the factory towing package. I have the four prong harness but need to convert it to the 7 prong version as we are getting a travel trailer. Is the already installed relay package in the kickboard the same for both the 4 and the 7? Are there any changes in the fusebox? How do you hook in the trailer brake regulator? There are two plug ins under the vehicle near the rear bumper, one has the current 4 prong plugged in. Would the 7 prong be plugged in to the same one the four is plugged in? I will still need to the ability to have the four prong to tow the boat as well. Thank you

In order to install a 7-way trailer wiring harness on your 2012 Nissan Frontier I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector part # 118266 which offers plug and play installation. Then, in order to retain both 4 and 7-way trailer connection points you will also need the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector part # HM40950. For a brake controller, I recommend the Hopkins InSIGHT Flex-Mount Trailer Brake Controller part # HM47297 with the Hopkins Plug-in Simple Brake Wiring Adapter part # HM47635 as this option allows for more freedom for mounting and it is also plug and play with the above harness.

The existing trailer wiring harness you have now does not provide power for all of the circuits on a 7-way so you will want to use the harness that is included with the above kit and plug that in behind the passenger kick panel. There will not be any additional fuses needed for the underhood fuse box. The trailer brake controller will then plug into a port under your drive side dash, up my the OBDII port with the above harness.

If you take a look at the attached photo, you will see the 7-way plugs into both of the ports you are referring to under the rear bumper.
