5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Turning Point Pin Box

Hello experts, We just purchased our first 5th wheel and I will be installing a 5th wheel hitch. The unit has a Turning Point pin box and my truck is a 16 2500 Ram with the 6.4 bed. Can you install a slider hitch with this pin box or do I need fixed? Id like to position myself for a future purchase of a larger 5th wheel without the turning point box. Thanks!

Like a Sidewinder, the Turning Point Pin Box has a rotating turret so the pivot point is no longer at the king pin in the hitch, it is 22 inches rearward; because of this it is strongly recommended that you use a fixed fifth wheel hitch. Using the slider would mean the trailer's weight would be pushed too far behind the axle of your truck as opposed to being over the axle or just forward of it, which can put added stress on the truck, hitch, and trailer.

For a hitch I highly recommend the Curt A Series and since you said you would like to position yourself for a larger 5th wheel down the line you can use the 20,000 lb capacity, 24,000 lb capacity or 25,000 lb capacity model, though the specific one will depend on if your 2016 Ram 2500 has the OEM Prep Package with the puck system. Here is what you would need depending on if you have the prep package or not and what weight capacity you want.

2016 Ram 2500 without Factory Prep Package (Puck System):

- Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - 20,000 lbs # C16140 and Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ram Truck # C16427-204

- Curt A25 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - 25,000 lbs # C16180 and Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Ram Truck # C16427-204

2016 Ram 2500 with Factory Prep Package (Puck System):

- Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - 20,000 lbs # C16044

- Curt A25 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - 24,000 lbs # C16046

You may have noticed that for the prep package the A25 actually has a 24,000 lb capacity and this is because while the head unit is rated for 25,000 lbs the legs are only rated for 24,000 lbs and you do need to follow the lowest-rated component.

The Curt A20 and A25 is a great option because they combine reliability with ease-of-use. These hitches will give you a highly secure connection with your trailer's king pin because of its interlocking dual jaw system that wraps totally around your king pin. It also has a handy indicator system which will let you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow. This color-coded system, which you can check out in the accompanying photo along with the jaws, makes the process of hooking up or disconnecting your trailer much simpler.

The Curt A Series fifth wheel hitches have a fully articulating head which eases the coupling process and have built in zerk fittings, making adding lube to the hitch an easy process. Additionally, each one of these hitches come with a lifetime warranty, which speaks to their durability.

I do recommend using the Sidewinder Wedge for Curt A Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # C16992 to to prevent the king pin of your Lippert Turning Point from rotating in your hitch.

I've added links to some video reviews for you to take a look at, including an install of the bracket kit and rails on a 2016 Ram 2500.
