Question:
I have a 10k lb dexter axle and the trailer is from 1985. The tread inside the cap seams to be just off by a bit as I screw in it skips and pops one side out. Any idea whats going on or if I bought wrong part?

That's odd. The part # RG04-270 that you referenced is SUPPOSED to fit all Dexter 10k oil bath hubs manufactured prior to 2009. Is it possible it's a 9k axle? This cap fits the following:
9,000-lb Axles manufactured from October 1989 to July 2009
10,000-lb Axles manufactured prior to July 2009
12,000-lb and 15,000-lb Heavy-duty axles
