Yes, you can use a weight distribution system with your 2019 Volkswagen Atlas and to answer your other question, the Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 is a fantastic option.

Before that you need to start with a trailer hitch that is compatible with a weight distribution system and for that you will need the Draw-Tite # 76176. This is a 2 inch hitch with a 900 lb tongue weight capacity and 6,000 lb towing capacity; it will be a great hitch for your Atlas because not only does it not require drilling to install, but it also has a black powder coat to protect it from rust and comes with a lifetime warranty. I have added a photo a customer sent in which shows this hitch installed on their Atlas.

In regards to the Curt Echo # C51180 this is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is both highly effective and easy to use. It simply plugs into your 7-way and you only need a smartphone (or tablet) in order to use it; just download the Echo's app and you will be set.

To add the Echo brake controller you need will need wiring, starting with a 4-flat. For your Atlas I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118754 because the manufacturer, Tekonsha, has a strong reputation for making highly reliable harnesses. The other thing you are going to need is the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L which will give you the hardware and 7-way connector needed to install the Echo.

In terms of weight distribution, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2019 VW Atlas.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the Sherline # 5780 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

For example, if your TTW was 1,200 lbs you would want the Equal-i-zer # EQ37140ET, which is for TTW between 1,000 lbs and 1,400 lbs. If you let me know what your TTW is I would be happy to make a recommendation for you so you can get the correct system.

You can use the Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180 because you already have a 7-way on your 2019 VW Atlas and for a travel trailer that is 4,500 lbs the weight distribution system you will want to use is the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET which is for total tongue weights in between 600 lbs and 1,000 lbs.

This system prevents sway instead of just manages it using 4 points of sway control via friction in the spring bars. It also uses clamp-on brackets so you won't have to drill along your trailer frame, and allows you to back up with the system on.

Our customers who have used this system regard it very highly, with well over 400 reviews it has averaged nearly 5 out of 5 stars, as you can see on the product page. This system comes with everything you need for installation though it is recommended you use thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 to help install the hitch ball.

Question:

Does the HT32216 work on a Grand Design travel trailes? Is this a 4point sway control?

The Husky Center Line Weight Distribution # HT32216 is 4-point sway control but is not a fit for a specific trailer. It will work if your TTW is between 400 lbs and 600 lbs and requires your trailer to have a frame which is no taller than 8" and no wider than 2". It will also require your brackets to be positioned between 28-1/2" and 30-1/2" from the center of the ball socket on the coupler so you need to make sure you have that much distance along the frame.

If your TTW is not between 400 lbs and 600 lbs the next Husky Center Line Weight Distribution # HT32217 which is for TTW between 600 lbs and 800 lbs. This system does come with everything you need for installation including the hitch ball and shank.
