Trailer Hitch and Wiring to Tow a Small Trailer with a 2013 Ford Fusion

Question:

I’m looking into buying a hitch for my car so I can haul a small trailer with my kayak on it. I was wondering if this hitch would be able to handle this. I’ve seen mostly bike racks and haven’t seen any pictures with actual trailers attached to it.

Curt trailer hitch # C12091 is a Class II hitch rated for 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight so it is more than capable of towing a small trailer loaded with a kayak. You are limited by the vehicle though.

If your Fusion has the 1.6 liter motor or the 2.5 liter motor then the max weight it can tow is 1,000 pounds. If you have the 2.0 liter motor the max is 2,000 pounds. Assuming that the combined weight of the trailer and kayak is under the vehicle capacity you will be good to go.

The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # C45016. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # A-80. For a 2 inch ball use A-82. And for trailer wiring use # 118574 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked videos showing example installations of the hitch and wiring.
