Weight Distribution for a 2000 GMC Yukon XL Towing a 3,500 Pound Trailer
Question:
I have a 2000 yukon xl with tow package. Will be towing my ameri lite 19.8 weighs 3000-3500. Aditional weight would be a full 48qt cooler in the back of the truck. 500# tongue weight ???? I have towed it with my 96 dodge ram 4x4 just a ball hitch without load or sway problems. Will i need a weight distribution hitch with the yukon ?

SUVs such as your 2000 GMC Yukon XL tend to have a softer rear suspension than trucks for the comfort of passengers. It doesn't take much to compress that suspension so you could experience some squat at the back. The general rule with weight distribution is that if the trailer when loaded and ready to tow weighs at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight then it is a good idea to use weight distribution. The curb weight of a 2000 Yukon XL is in the neighborhood of 4,700 pounds to 5,200 pounds so your trailer will be at least 50 percent of the vehicle weight.
Put all of this together and I do recommend a weight distribution system. Since the estimated trailer tongue weight is 500 pounds I recommend Fastway system # FA92-00-0800 which is rated for 400 to 800 pounds tongue weight or, if you want to go with a lighter system, # FA92-00-0600, rated for 250 to 600 pounds. Ideally the system you use will have a range that puts your trailer's tongue weight right in the middle of that range.
For either system you will need a compatible ball such as # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch.
