Safety Chain and Trailer Break Away Switch Cable Length Recommendation
Published 04/27/2018 >
Question:
Is the cable on the the Break Away Switch supposed to be shorter than the Safety Chain length? It seems that if the trailer became unhitched the chains would stop the Break Away Switch cable from pulling the pin to engage the breaks.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The breakaway cable should be longer than the safety chains according to RVIA Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. This will activate the brakes in the event you lose the trailer connection and the safety chains fail which will bring the trailer to a stop.
