Comparing the EvenKeel # Y04052 and SweetRoll # Y04074 for an 80 lb Kayak on a 2005 Ford Exploerer

ford explorer 05 with factory cross bars i am having to replace V kayak holders walden. i am considering the even keel but am worried that when i try to load my kayak from the rear it wont be able to slide on the even keel pads. what do you think? its a heavy kayak 56 lbs. i think the sweet roll is overkill and i like that the even keel can also carry my paddle board. just didnt know how grippy the pads are... thanks

Both the EvenKeel # Y04052 and the SweetRoll # Y04074 are great options for carrying your 56 lb kayak.

Since the SweetRoll has a higher price-point than the EvenKeel I can see why there is some hesitation. If you only plan on kayaking occasionally, like 3 or 4 times a season, then I definitely recommend going with the EvenKeel. Without rollers it won't be as easy as loading the SweetRoll, but you are only having to muscle it into place a few times.

However, if you go kayaking frequently, like every weekend, then I do recommend going with the SweetRoll. The rollers on the end will make your life much easier with loading and unloading it a lot. Especially since your 2005 Ford Explorer is a taller vehicle.

The EvenKeel and the SweetRoll have both been tested for a kayak that weighs up to 80 lbs so has long as you have your kayak/paddle board properly secured either carrier will do a great job at providing enough friction to keep your equipment from moving.
