Recommended 5th Wheel Rails and Hitch for 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 5.5 Bed for Reese Revolution Pin Box

Question:

I have a new 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with a short 5 1/2foot bed. Can I use the Reese revolution hitch on my GMC truck and 5 wheel Jayco HT 27.5 5th wheel trailer. Is there any advantage of having the slider attached to the trailer vs using a Pullrite slider hitch attached to the truck bed? It seems like it would be less cumbersome and a cleaner installation if attached to the 5th wheel trailer instead of having all this hitch and slider mechanism in the bed of the pick up. Thanks

A Reese Revolution is the equivalent of the Reese Sidewinder. The Revolution is the factory installed option and the Sidewinder is the very similar aftermarket option. For a 5-1/2 foot bed, a sliding hitch will not work, so the Revolution or Sidewinder route is the only option to provide you with turning clearance. The really good news is that is by far the ideal option even if you had a longer bed truck.

For your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500, I recommend you start with the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50064-58. This rail kit is a custom fit for your truck and you will not need to drill into your frame. Then for your hitch, I recommend the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16140. This hitch has an interlocking jaw to provide the best king pin connection to minimize jarring and chucking. For the best fit with your Revolution or Sidewinder, I recommend the custom wedge # C16992 which is a custom fit for this hitch head.

Finally, you may want to consider using a 5th wheel harness like # 50-97-410 to give you a second working 7-way trailer connection in the bed of your truck for easy connection and a clean look.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Question:

Is the sidewinder 61420 the right model for my Jayco HT 27.5 5th wheel?

The Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret - 16,000 lbs # RP61420 or the air ride 5th Airborne Sidewinder # RP61422 are the correct fit for your Jayco HT 27.5 foot 5th wheel trailer. Both will provide you with the turning clearance you desire, but the 5th Airborne has an integrated air bag to absorb shock and further assist with jarring and chucking.

I've attached videos of both to assist.

The MorRyde Pin box on your trailer is already a replacement pin box from the original. Without knowing the numbers on the pin box the best way to confirm a fit is to use the bolts that secure the pin box to measure for fit. I've attached an article to assist.

The Sidewinder # RP61450 will fit pin boxes that have bolts 8 inches on center horizontally and 1-1/2 inches on center vertically with a 12 inch wide pin box.

The Sidewinder # RP61420 or # RP61422 are the correct fit if you have bolts that are 7-7/8 inches on center horizontally and 2 inches on center vertically. The pin box width will still be 12 inches.

Let me know if you have further questions.

The Sidewinder compatible with your bolt pattern for a 1621HD will be same as the 1621 with the exception of the 19K option.

Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret - 16,000 lbs # RP61420
5th Airborne Premium 5th Wheel Air Ride King Pin w/ Sidewinder and Turret # RP61422
and 19K Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret # RP61421

The Reese # RP61450 is not compatible with the bolt pattern of your pin box. You will need the Reese part # RP61420 for the 1621HD fit of your MORryde Pin box. The # RP61420 is the correct fit for your trailer based on the info you provided.
