The item you selected, Master Lock Trailer Coupler, part # F223000301, has a bolt hole spacing of 3 inches from center to center. This coupler should work on your trailer if it has a 3 inch channel.

I walked out to our warehouse and measured a coupler with the same bolt hole spacing, Dutton-Lainson Trailer Coupler, part # DL13897. It measured approximately 2.5 inches between the holes and 3 inches from center of hole to center of hole.

for Item DL13897 , I know holes on the side are 3 inches appart, but from the inside ''top'' where the 3x3 tubing seats what is the distance from that plane to the center of the holes on the side ? In other words, if I measure from the top of the 3x3 tubing where the coupling is mounted to the center of the side holes , what is the distance ?

From the top of the Trailer Coupler # DL13897 to the center of the side mounting holes there's a distance of just about 1-1/2". I would definitely wait until you have the coupler on-hand though to drill any holes.
