What Parts are Needed to Flat Tow a 1989 Chevy Astro 2 Wheel Drive Automatic
Question:
First of all... Is it advisable to flat tow a 1989 Chevy Astro, 2wd, AT, V6, that is in great condition with new tires? If so, what kits would you reccomend and I dont want to disconnect the drive shaft. Thanks

I have done a little research and have found that your 1989 Chevy Astro can be flat towed, but it does require a transmission lube pump. A company called Remco makes the part you will need. To verify this, you can consult the vehicle owners manual to determine the proper procedures for flat towing your van. In addition to a pump, some vehicles must be equipped with an axle disconnect, drive line disconnect, or free-wheeling hubs before they can be towed.
In order to flat tow, you will first need to install base plates on the vehicle. You can use Roadmaster Standard Base Plates, # 101-1. The base plates provide a safe and secure mounting location for a tow bar. For an economical tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar, # RM-020. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view.
To complete the towing set up for your Astro, you will need safety cables, lighting, and a supplemental braking system as required by law. For safety cables, I recommend RoadMaster 64 inch Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables, # RM-643. For lights, there are a couple of options. If you do not plan on towing the Astro often, I recommend magnetic light kit # RM-2120.
If you do plan on towing it frequently, I recommend installing diodes, # 38955. I have included a link to our Flat Towing FAQ article hub that contains numerous FAQ articles on flat towing including some on wiring that will help to choose the correct lighting solution for you.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system when flat towing a vehicle. For a braking system, the easiest to use and install would be the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking System, # RM-9400. This system installs quickly so you are ready to go in minutes. It engages the towed vehicle brakes proportionally to how much the towing vehicle is braking, reducing wear of both vehicles brakes.
