Recommended Kayak Carrier for 2009 Acura RDX

Question:

I have a 2009 Acura RDX without rails. Investors a hullavator that I had on my prior vehicle that had factory rails, Im looking for other options now because the roof rack would be lower mounting to doors. Are there rear hitch carriers for kayaks? Its 9 feet long, could I use a bike carrier?would the Viking solution work?

I do have a solution for you, however there is not a hitch mounted product available for your 2009 Acura RDX that will work to transport your kayak.

There are a couple of options for carrying your kayak on the roof of your Acura if it does not have factory side rails. The first, which is what I recommend, is installing a complete roof rack to use with a roof mounted kayak carrier. For a sturdy but economical system, I suggest looking at the Rhino-Rack 2500 Roof Rack. This roof rack consists of # RREB137B for the two 54 inch long Square Crossbars, # RRRLKVA for the 2500 Series Legs, # RREB-FK1 for the Square Bar Adapter, and # DK177 for the Fit Kit. This roof rack has a weight capacity of 165 pounds.

Then for a kayak carrier, I recommend the Thule Hull-A-Port Kayak Carrier # TH834. These are J-style cradles that will let you carry one kayak of up to 36 inches wide and 75 pounds. The cradles will attach to the roof rack crossbars and feature a wide mouth for easier one person loading. It includes 2 tie-down straps with padded buckles and a set of bow/stern tie-downs for securing the kayak. I have attached a video demonstration on this carrier so you can see it in action.

Another option, if you do not wish to install a roof rack on your Acura, is a foam block carrier like the Swagman Coastal Kayak Carrier # S65156. These rectangular foam blocks can be secured onto the naked roof of your vehicle and will support your kayak using tie-down straps like # S65137. This is a great option if you do not plan on transporting your kayak very often and will only be traveling shorter distances. I have also included a video demonstration on this system so you can see exactly how it works.
