Recommended Replacement 10 Inch Hydraulic Drum Brakes for 1985 EZ Loader Boat Trailer

Updated 07/31/2017 | Published 07/28/2017

Question:

I just purchased a Atwood trailer coupler AT82543 and not sure what brakes I need to match. My trailer is 1985 ez tandem axle, with surge brakes that need replacing what are uni servo? I want to match my old brakes that are 10 inch, I also think I want free backing. Final question, price reflects quality right, I think I should stay clear of the $ brake set. Thanks

The Atwood Brake Actuator AT82543 referenced in your question is compatible with any trailer that has hydraulic drum brakes.

Uni-servo wheel cylinders are found on certain hydraulic brake assemblies. If an assembly has them, this basically means that they are not free-backing assemblies, as they feature a single-pushrod wheel cylinder that will retain about 20 percent of their braking ability in reverse.

If your trailer has a 3,500 pound axle, I recommend looking at the Demco Hydraulic Brake Kit # # 40716-15. These brakes are 10 inches in diameter and 2-1/4 inches wide. They use a 4 bolt mounting flange pattern and feature galvanized backing plates and stainless steel spring hardware for excellent corrosion resistance. These are indeed free-backing assemblies and will fit wheel sizes of 13 inches, 14 inches or 15 inches. The kit will include both the left hand and right hand assemblies.

The difference in price between brake assemblies of the same size will typically have to do with their outer coating, which is important to consider based on application (water exposure, etc) along with the brake assembly manufacturer. A lower priced set is not necessarily an indication of its quality.

I have included a link that will take you to our available selection of 10 inch hydraulic drum brakes that you can look through.
