Recommended Hitch & Cargo Carrier Options for 2016 Toyota Highlander

Question:

We have a 2016 Toyota Highlander. We need more cargo space, so we are looking at rear cargo solutions. We will need a hitch receiver, and we would like a cargo solution that can slide or swing out of the way of the rear door so we can open it to let the dog out even when the cargo is loaded. Do you have recommendations for all the parts wed need to achieve this? Do you recommend the cargo tray + bag solutions or the all-in-one rear cargo box? Thank you!

We can help you with a hitch and hitch-mounted cargo carrier that will give you access to the rear of the Highlander.

For a hitch I suggest the Draw-Tite round tube Class III hitch # 75896. This hitch offers no-drill installation and allows a full-size spare tire to remain installed. It has the same capacity as others but costs a bit less. It also fits hybrid models. You can refer to the linked installation instructions and video to see the whole process.

Your best choice of carrier will depend to a great extent on the type of items you need to transport. If protection from the elements is a requirement then you might prefer the Rola swing-away enclosed carrier # 59109. This systems consists of a swing-away mechanism that allows you access to the vehicle even when the unit is loaded up to its 250-lb capacity. The enclosed carrier portion can be easily removed from its support tray if desired. Have a look at the specs for the internal dimensions to gauge whether this will fit your anticipated cargo items. This is the only option for an enclosed swing-away carrier that can be swung away when fully loaded. You can use an anti-rattle lock # 63232 to secure the carrier to your hitch.

Other slide-out carrier products are shown on the linked page. These slide-out carrier options from Let's Go Aero offer a higher 300-lb cargo weight rating and are offered in both open and enclosed designs in two color choices.

Please feel free to let me know more about your cargo items and I may be able to help you decide on your best option. The linked articles may be helpful too.
