Recommendations For Carrying 4 Pairs of Skis & Luggage On 2011 Ford Flex w/o Factory Roof Rack

Question:

I drive a 2011 Flex with no roof rails extended moon roof. I need to carry 4 pr of skis and luggage for family. What do you suggest?

Expert Reply:

For your 2011 Ford Flex without roof rails and extended moon roof, I would recommend installing a roof rack system to carry your skis. For carrying your luggage, I would recommend installing a hitch mounted cargo carrier, for which you would need to install a trailer hitch on your Ford Flex.

For a roof rack, I would recommend Thule Roof Rack For Ford Flex, part # TH480R, THARB60, THKIT1518, which includes everything needed to mount to the roof of your 2011 Ford Flex.

To mount 4 pairs of skis to you roof rack, I would recommend Thule SnowPack Extender Ski and Snowboard Carrier, part # TH7325, which can carry up to 6 pairs of skis. The Thule SnowPack also has a slide out feature to make loading skis easier and also locks to keep skis secure (see video).

To mount a cargo carrier to your vehicle, you will need to install a trailer hitch. For a hitch, I would recommend Curt Trailer Hitch for the Ford Flex, part # 13551, which is a Class III, 2 Inch Hitch and will fit all models of the Flex except the EcoBoost. If you have the EcoBoost model, I would recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for the Ford Flex, part # 75679, which is also a Class III, 2 Inch hitch but has a 1,000 pound less capacity.

For a cargo carrier, the item you selected, Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # 63153, would be a good hitch mounted carrier to carry your luggage. To secure the cargo carrier to your hitch, you will need Pin and Clip, part # PC3. For added security, I would recommend the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # 7683.

For keeping your cargo and luggage covered from the elements, I would recommend the Extra Large Cargo Carrier Bag, part # 988501.

Also available for the Pro Series Cargo Carrier is Cargo Carrier Light Kit, part # 20174, which is an added safety feature and a must have if the cargo will be blocking the view of your tail lights. To connect part # 20174 to your Ford Flex, you will need to install Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # 118472.

Whenever loading your roof, you will want to stay within the limits of your roof rack and consult your vehicles owners manual for the load capacity of your vehicles roof. The same is true with weight of your hitch, the weight of the cargo carrier, plus weight of any cargo is considered tongue weight. You will want to stay within under the tongue weight limits of the hitch and the vehicle.

I have linked a video installation and instructions for the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13551. I have also linked a video review and instructions for the Pro Series Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # 63153, Cargo Carrier Light Kit, part # 20174, and the Thule SnowPack Ski and Snowboard Carrier, part # TH7325, that you may find as a good reference.
