Weight Distribution and Brake Controller Recommendations for a 2014 Honda Ridgeline Sport
Question:
I have a 2014 Forest River Travel Trailer single axle with a dry weight of 3800 pounds. I will be towing it with a 2014 Honda Ridgeline Sport with a towing capacity of 5000 pounds. I would like to purchase a weight distribution hitch and brake controller. What would be your recommendations for these?

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
If we go by the maximum your 2014 Honda Ridgeline can tow then we are looking at a tongue weight anywhere between 380 pounds (10 percent of the dry trailer weight) and 750 pounds (15 percent of the max the Ridgeline can tow).
Based on the dry weight I anticipate that a system rated for up to 600 pounds such as # RP66558 would be perfect. If you do not want sway control and are only looking for weight distribution then I recommend # RP67509. For either system you would need a ball, # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch.
For a brake controller, if your Ridgeline came with the factory 7-Way trailer connector, you can use wiring harness # 3070-P and the P2 brake controller # 90885. The P2 is easy to set up and use and it is reliable.
If the vehicle does not have a factory trailer connector then you would first install a 4-Way, # 118491. Then you would install # ETBC7 and hardwire in the brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation.
