Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, 7-Way Trailer Connector, and Brake Controller on 2017 Tacoma

Question:

I just purchased a 2017 Tacoma Limited, without the factory tow package. I want to install a hitch, 7 pin wiring, and a brake controller. I found, under the dash, the brake controller plug in the factory wiring loom. So, it seems that the standard factory wiring harness includes the trailer wiring. However, I cant find where those wires go to at the rear to connect to a 7 pin connector. Can you help?

Sounds like you're trying to build your own tow package on your new 2017 Toyota Tacoma. We can certainly help you with that.

We'll begin with the hitch receiver. I suggest the Draw-Tite # 75238. It's a Class III, 2 inch hitch with a gross trailer weight of 7,000 pounds and maximum tongue weight of 1,50 pounds. Higher than a lot of Class III hitches. It's a fairly straight forward installation because it bolts right to your truck's frame.

For a wiring harness to get power to your trailer you'll first need a 4-way trailer connector. The Tekonsha # 118685 will provide this. It plugs into your truck's wiring behind both tail lights. There's no cutting or splicing into the wiring. The harness featrues a powered ModuLite to protect your truck's wiring.

Once you have the 4-way use our # ETBC7 kit to convert it to a 7-way trailer connector. The kit also includes all the wiring needed to power your trailer's brakes from the brake controller. After this is installed you'll have both a 4-way and 7-way on the back of your truck.

The most realiable and easiest to use brake controller we carry is the Prodigy P3 # 90195. It has an easy to read LCD that sets it apart. Since you've already found the connector under your dashboard part # 3031-P is the harness that will connect the P3 to your Tacoma.

Finally, an adjustable ball mount will finish the package. The B&W Tow & Stow # BWTS10038B is my personal favorite. It includes two hitch balls and provides up to a 5 inch drop or 5-1/2 inch rise. The real benefit of the Tow & Stow is that it can be stored under the hitch out of the way when you're not using it by just flipping it under the shank. Also if you'd like to secure it to your hitch receiver you can use the locking hitch pin # BWTS51234.
