Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2017 Ford F-250 and 7,000 Pound Trailer

Question:

I have a 2017 F250 Super Cab 2WD that I am using to tow our travel trailer 550 lb TW and around 7000 lb gross trailer weight. What WDH with sway control would you recommend ?

Expert Reply:

I assume that is the dry tongue weight because tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. So for a trailer weighing 7,000 pounds max the tongue weight would be 700 to 1,050 pounds.

Tongue weight is important because to choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

So if you are at 550 pounds empty and the max is around 1,050 pounds I recommend a system that is rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds to cover the majority of that range and because when loaded the tongue will be greater than 600 pounds.

The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 is an excellent system that comes with built in sway control. I have used this system at a recent training and it is easy to set up and works quite well. Take a look at the video I have linked showing a demonstration.

The system comes with everything but a ball. For a 2-5/16 inch ball you can use # 19286. I have also included some links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
