Recommended 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD With 5th Wheel Prep

I have a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, standard bed, diesel, w/ 5th wheel prep. What is the best hitch you would recommend? I will be towing a Heartland Sundance 5th wheel #SD2900MK, gvwr 13,930lb. Thank you.

It looks like the 2011 Silverado models have an increased fifth-wheel towing capacity, so I would recommend going with a hitch rated up to 20000lbs, to take advantage of the upgrades they have included on the new models.

The Reese fifth-wheel hitch # RP30081 would be a good choice for your application, and this can be installed using custom fifth-wheel rail installation kit # RP50066-58, which will mount to the existing holes in your truck frame. Luckily, Chevy even made some changes to the frame, making it easier to mount fifth-wheel brackets and rails.

You will not need to install wiring, as this should have been included with your fifth-wheel prep package.

Additionally, I would recommend getting a lube plate like part # 16721, as this eliminates the need to lube the setup every time you get ready to tow. To lock the hitch to the bed rails, you could use a combination of the Reese pull pin lock plates, part # RP58093, and Master Lock shrouded padlock # 37DAT. This would act as a theft deterrent, and keep the hitch from separating from your truck bed.

King pin lock # KPL would also be a good addition to your setup, as it will lock the trailer while not in use.

Please note that the # RP30081 hitch would only be compatible if your truck has an 8ft long bed. All the information I found said that this should be the standard bed length for the 2011 model year. If you do happen to have a 6ft bed, you would use the same rail installation kit, but use fifth-wheel hitch # RP30084, as 6-1/2ft truck beds will require the use of a hitch with a slider.

You can view the installation instructions for the hitch and # RP50066-58 rail installation kit below, as well as some additional information on fifth-wheel towing.
