I checked with the 2016 Honda Pilot owner's manual and found the following information regarding transmission coolers: An additional ATF (automatic transmission fluid) cooler is required to keep the
transmission from overheating when towing more than 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). So if the trailer is less than 1,200 you would not have to have a transmission cooler.

But I did also find this information in the manual: Trailer brakes are recommended for any trailer with a total weight of 1,000 lbs (450 kg) or more. So if your trailer has electric brakes you can add a brake controller. If the van has the factory installed 7-Way trailer connector you would just need a brake controller, such as # 90885, and a wiring harness to plug it in, # 3070-P.

If the Pilot did not come with the factory 7-Way and you wanted to add a brake controller you would need to install a 4-Way, # 118760, and then install # ETBC7 and the brake controller. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
