You are correct that a sliding 5th wheel hitch is necessary for short bed applications. A sliding hitch can still be used in a long bed so long as the hitch remains in the forward locked position at all times. This is required to keep the trailer's king pin weight over or slightly forward of the rear axle centerline. If the trailer's tongue weight were any further back than that your head lights could start pointing upward and your rear end sag.

For your current truck, the 1994 Chevrolet C/K Series 2500, you could use a slider hitch like Reese 16K # RP30051 along with Universal Base Rail installation kit # RP30035. For a wiring harness use # 20023.
