Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta Behind an RV

Question:

Hello. I want to flat tow my 98 Jetta behind a 2006 Alfa with a Freightliner xc chassis. The base plate from Blue Ox BX 3814 will work for this application. I need to know what is the best tow bar. Motorhome mount or using with a ball hitch. Which is better? What are the benefits of the motorhome mount over the ball hitch? I have a Brakemaster led on my motorhome dash and there is an airhose outlet on the back of the moho. Can I use the Roadmaster Brakemaster or do I need more parts in the moho to use the Brakemaster. I bought this moho used from a dealer so it is unknown what the other owner did. I know there is a part for the Brakemaster that connectes to the brake pedal in the toad. I plan to use the wirless lights you have on your website instead of extending the wiring from the moho .Thanks

Motor Home mount tow bars are considered more versatile and safe than tow bars that connect to a ball. Also the motor home mount will store on the motor home and not the vehicle so you won't have to disconnect the tow bar from both to drive the vehicle.

Like you said, base plates # BX3814 will fit your 1998 VW Jetta with air conditioning but without a turbo. For a compatible tow bar I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7365. This tow bar has a 6,500 pound capacity so it can handle the Jetta with ease. And it comes with safety cables so you will not have to buy any separately. I have linked a video review of this tow bar for you.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

For a wireless lighting kit like you mentioned I recommend a magnetic kit # LIWSR1-7B because it is easy to set up and bypasses the vehicle wiring.

Roadmaster does not list the Brakemaster system as a fit for the 1998 Jetta so I cannot recommend it. Instead I recommend the SMI Air Force One # SM99243. Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
