How is the 18,800 lb Capacity of the Fulton Safety Chains FCHA0050324 Determined
Question:
I bought you 5/16 grade 70 chain that is rated at 18800 lbs but local chain experts say it is really only rated at 5400 lbs working load. What is the disconnect here Pardon the pun

The 18.8k capacity for the # FCHA0050324 that you referenced is listed as the GTW or gross trailer weight.
This chain can be used on a trailer that weighs up to 18,800 lbs. The working load limit is a different capacity that would be more relevant for using the chain to secure cargo.
Since in the event of a trailer coming un coupled the chains would not have 18,800 lbs put on them, since the road supports the total weight of the trailer, You would not need a chain with a working load limit higher than the total weight of the trailer.
