Trailer Hitch, Bike Rack and Towing Equipment Recommendation for 2015 Toyota Sienna

Question:

I just upgraded my 2006 Toyota Sienna to a 2015 Toyota Sienna. Thus I need to buy a new hitch. The biggest issue with my last hitch was that it sometimes dragged the ground when going up a slanted driveway. Could you tell me which of your hitches for a 2015 Toyota Sienna has the most clearance? Also, is there any reason to have a 2inch receiver over a 1-1/4inch if all we plan to do is attach a bike rack and occasionally pull a pop-up trailer. Thanks.

I recommend a 2-inch Class III hitch for your 2015 Toyota Sienna over a smaller Class II type since it will give you higher capacity and/or a better safety margin. I suggest Curt 2-inch hitch # C13105 because it has the same capacity as the others but costs less. Written instructions and an install video are linked for you.

In terms of ground clearance all hitches made for your car will mount to the same points on the frame; no one particular hitch will give you noticeably better ground clearance than another. This has really more to do with the car's design than with the hitches themselves.

In a 2-inch Class III hitch you can use a Class III-compatible bike rack such as one of those shown on the linked page. For a family-sized rack I suggest the Yakima FullSwing # Y02465. This rack will fit well on your Sienna, offers a 4-bike capacity and it swings out of the way of your rear hatch, even when loaded, when you need access to the car's interior. As you consider racks keep in mind that you want one that offers at least 5-inches of clearance from its hitch pin hole. This will avoid rack and bike contact/interference with the rear of the van.

When you tow you will need a ball mount, hitch ball, pin and clip and a wiring harness. You'll choose a ball mount based on the height of your trailer coupler. Please see the linked article. You may care to use a kit like # 989900 for flexibility. It includes all of the parts required. For a wiring harness you can use # C56261; an install video for this is also included.
