How Does Anti-Rattle Device of a Kuat Transfer Bike Rack Work

Question:

We recently purchased the KUAT transfer rack 1.25 hitch and really like it. It does seem to ride a little loosed in the hitch, a little wobbly. Any suggestions for how to address this? Thanks

The threaded hitch pin of your Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Platform Rack # TS02G is designed so that when you tighten it down enough you will take all of the movement out of the hitch. It sounds like you just haven't tightened the pin down far enough quite yet.

Hello, I own the transfer 2. The rack has been wobbling and making clanking noises. The connection at the hinge is solid. I believe the wobbling comes from the swivel connection. One of the bolts is pretty tight but the one at the swivel point is kind of loose, but when I tighten it the rack won’t swivel up. I need a bit of guidance on which connection to secure. I’m afraid the wobbling will continue to loosen the connection. Thanks

The bolt connecting the shank to the main U-shaped platform should be completely tightened down. If this is lose it's likely what is causing the wobble. The bolts on the foot pedal though should be left as-is. These may have been the bolts you were referring to that are a bit loose. Is the wobble you described something new or is it a new rack altogether?

The connecting the shank with the u bars is tight. I just noticed the two bolts on the back side of the shank, perpendicular to the bolts on the foot pedal are loose. I was able to chat with one of you guys today and he advised to tighten those. Hope this solves the issue. I’ve had the rack for a few months. I assume the wobbling comes from the bolts loosening up due to the daily commute.

Okay great. Please don't hesitate to reach back out to us if the wobbling persists after tightening up those bolts.

I am using the Kuat Transfer 2 rack. I notice there is no wobble in the hitch when it is tightened. However, it seems to repeatedly loosen after a few trips. I then have to take out the wrench and tighten it again. Other Kuat racks I have seen have a tightening knob instead of having to use a wrench. Does the Transfer 2 have any such option and if so, do you carry it? Thanks

I wish there was a way to upgrade the anti-rattle design on the Kuat Transfer Rack to a knob-style like you mentioned, but you're only option is to use the bolt/wrench that it comes equipped with. Verifying a tight attachment before each trip is always a good idea, though. If you don't have one already, something like # PTW38106-24 will make this process easier.

@ChrisR , thank you. I thought that might be the case. Does adding the lock kit, which seems to come with a hitch lock, address this at all? By the way, you guys really are the best in terms of racks. Thanks again.

@KeithS The Lock Kit # HLT would upgrade the stock hitch pin so that the rack is actually locked to your vehicle (for a theft deterrent), but it won't enhance the anti-rattle function at all. It will maintain the same type of mechanism that's used now - you'll likely still need to re-tighten it every couple trips or so. I really appreciate the kind words. I wish I could have offered a better solution!
