Troubleshooting Tandem Axle Double-Eye Trailer Suspension Rear Shackle Strap That Moves

Question:

I have a tandem axle utility trailer. When i am on rough roads the rear shackle will pop down and the front remains pointing up. When this happens the rear tire is off the ground. I can pop it back up with a hydraulic jack but it just pops down again on rough roads. Whats the problem?

I suspect the problem with your rear shackle straps coming out of the correct position on rough roads occurs when the trailer is unloaded or at least when there is little or no weight on the rear. If this is the case you can either put some weight on the back of the trailer or slow down (I do know that's no fun!).

My technical contact at Dexter axle confirmed that there really is no cause for concern with the shackle strap moving like this as it will naturally re-position itself when under load in normal driving conditions.
