Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2013 Lincoln MKX

Hi, I have a 2013 Lincoln MKX. It does not have the factory trailer towing option. Can I install an aftermarket trailer hitch complete with wiring, or can you not splice into these newer vehicles?

Starting with a trailer hitch you can use Draw-Tite Class III hitch # 75992 on your 2013 Lincoln MKX. This hitch has a 2 inch receiver and is rated for 400 pounds tongue weight and 4,000 pounds gross trailer weight. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

For wiring you will not have to splice into the vehicle's wiring at all. The wiring harnesses for your vehicle plug in line with the tail light wiring. I recommend Tow Ready harness # 118519 because the tow Ready harnesses have proven to be reliable. You will need to connect this harness directly to the vehicle battery. This is what powers the trailer lights and further protects the vehicle's sensitive wiring. I have linked a video showing how the wiring installs.

If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
